Two days after some tipsy cops thrashed a drug trader, Inaruwa Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Drug Sellers’ Association today shut Inaruwa bazaar in Sunsari in protest against police brutality.
Anil Gupta, owner of Gupta Pharmacy near Inaruwa hospital, was waylaid and thrashed by drunk cops in front of the district Police Office on Sunday. “A group of tipsy policemen led by Inspector Durga Dahal verbally abused and attacked me while I was on my way home from the medical shop at 9:30 pm,” said the victim, adding that some on-duty cops at the police office gate took him briefly into custody following ill-treatment.
“I was detained at the police office for half-an-hour,” he said, adding that cops snatched his mobile set and prevented him from calling his family.
Almost all industrial and commercial establishments and shops in the bazaar remained shut today.
Inaruwa CCI treasurer Kedar Ojha warned that the bazaar closure and other struggle programmes would be played out again if action was not taken against the irresponsible policemen involved in the ‘hooliganism’.
SP Raju Manandhar of Sunsari said investigation into the case was under way. “We are trying to resolve the issue through talks. If we find policemen guilty, action will be taken against them,” he said.
